Durk’s rapid rise in popularity is a testament to the power of his self-reliant mindset. Not wanting to follow other Drill artists’ footsteps, he want his own sound. “Like in the Drill movement, everyone was doing it, but I came in and tried to change it. I started melodizing and harmonizing with it.” And people are eating it up, just look at his mixtape statistics on Datpiff.
“It makes me feel good, it’s like my first big mixtape that went national. Getting this response from it feels good, like it hasn’t even been a month yet.”
His work hasn’t only been noticed by fans, but industry insiders have also taken note. French Montana and his Coke Boyz Records have become close friends with the young emcee, and it was announced earlier this year that Durk would be a member of their roster. Def Jam has also signed him to their label, giving him some much needed support. Even though he has paved a way for himself, he is well aware that he has made few mistakes; including the marketing of his hit “Dis Ain’t What U Want.”
“I knew people were going to relate with it, but not like that. At the same time, it could have been better, there things I didn’t know. A lot of things were pushed to me, now I’m learning from the people around me and the label. I got the new single with French, who knows a lot, and Def Jam is in the cut.”
With the support system around him and his determination, success is definitely in his path. If he continues down this road, becoming a household name like his friend and colleague Chief Keef is not outside the question. Durk sounds determined to keep his head to the grindstone and continue working, which will definitely help him on his way to stardom.
“I just keep working, if you keep coming out with singles that’s good for your mixtape and album. We just working on these singles to give them to the label, so they can start kicking in and being a part of the investment.” If they don’t, they are missing out on something big.
Shout Out to the OTF family as well.
