Parents across the country have been put on alert for a dangerous new trend that brings a new meaning to the term “nose candy.”
Kids and teens are snorting the candy Smarties.
Experts say that there are real dangers associated with snorting the crushed up candies, aside from the fact kids are mimicking hardcore drug use.
The troubling trend became such a problem at Scarborough Middle School in Maine that school officials issued an informational document to parents, warning them of the dangers their kids face from snorting Smarties.
The document says that students have not only been snorting the candy, but “smoking” the candy by putting the powder in their mouths and attempting to blow it out of their noses.
The document further warns that the Smarties can “act like razor blades” if not crushed up finely enough, and can lead to infection and scarring of the nasal cavity. Dr. Oren Friedman of the Mayo Clinic is quoted as saying that there’s even the possibility of nasal maggots “feeding on the sugary dust wedged inside the nose.”
