The blasts occurred the day before the third anniversary of the January 25, 2011 revolution. Since the revolution, the country has seen its first democratic election and the removal of that leader, President Mohammed Morsi, by what many would call a coup d’etat. Egypt recently criminalized Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood party, sparking protests from Islamists and human rights organizations.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for today’s attacks.
