Its hard to deny Memphis’ musical influence on Hip Hop at the moment. The sounds that use to be locked in the southern city, relegated to Chevy trunks and strip clubs, has taken the world by storm; bringing Juicy J and Three Six Mafia nationally and global stardom, helping to revitalize the trill movement, codeine and all. However, artists in Tennessee are not satisfied with just reminiscing on the past, but on progressing their art form forward. June falls perfectly into that characterization, especially on his acclaimed Evol mixtape.

This aspiring emcee returns today, with some help from Big K.R.I.T., on his newest track “Big Pimpin.”  The track features some soulful upbeat production from frequent collaborator, Teddy Walton. While Jay Z’s classic track, with the same name, definitely influenced June’s song, the entire idea and experience is filtered through the sounds of the South. It is a great interpretation and reworking.
