Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder entered Barclays Center on Friday night to take on a hot Brooklyn Nets squad but instead it was a complete blowout. The Nets kept Durant from scoring 30 points but it’s only because they almost lost by that much.
The Thunder led by as many as 32 points and coach Scott Brooks decided to pull Durant late in the third quarter. Durant also sat out the entire fourth quarter leaving his scoring total at 26 points on 10-12 shooting from the field and 7 assists. Falling just shy of 30 points, Durant’s streak ended at 12 games.
The streak ends with Durant having averaged 35.9 points per game in January during this run, one which saw him become the first player with at least 550 points and 90 assists in any month since Michael Jordan did it back in March of 1987, according to Elias Sports Bureau.
Even former President Bill Clinton was seated courtside and spoke on Durant’s greatness.
“I guess you can say that in the last 12 or 13 games, I’m the only one who can stop him from scoring 30,” Brooks said.
Well many fans were disappointed Durant was relieved that it was over.
“Man, I’m glad it’s over with,” Durant said of his streak. “I’d much rather take the win. . . . That’s the most important streak.” The Thunder have a 10-game winning streak and a league best 38-10 record.
Durant wasn’t the only star of the night as Serge Ibaka had 25 points on a flawless 12-12 from the field and added 9 rebounds.
While the game was a complete disappointment for the Nets they ended January with a 10-3 record, marking their best January winning percentage in the team’s 38-year NBA history.
