“Who the f*ck told ’em that they was like Nicki, oh no b*tches didn’t”. That’s how Nicki Minaj began her scene-stealing verse on her remix to Young Thug‘s infectious “Danny Glover” single, and it was as effective a warning shot as ever. In the intro of said remix she stated she was working on an album and a mixtape at the same time, meaning we probably have quite a few pink Fridays in our future, and boy did she need it. Void from the album scene since 2012, Nicki has been criticized and examined more than she’s been celebrated musically, and the faith hip-hop placed in her in 2010 when she officially began her career has since been siphoned and placed elsewhere. What she needs, in 2014, is a quintessential hip-hop album. We see that she can do pop, and crossover, but can she prove herself as a rapper? She’s had a very entertaining run of guest verses (“Twerk It”, “Love More”, “Clappers”), but can she keep that up for an entire album? We’ll see.
