Lupe Fiasco is one of the best lyricists of all time. May not be fact to many, but that’s my (Khari) personal opinion. So, I actually don’t think he has anything to prove at all, but speaking in terms of current affairs and the state of his rap career, Lupe needs to have a big year to stay in everyone else’s conversation, and not just mine. His last album, despite being Grammy-nominated, was largely overshadowed by his controversial dealings with Chi-raq and protests against Barack Obama. The Chicago drill scene, anchored in large part by Chief Keef‘s Finally Rich album, owned 2013, and despite releases from Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa, Kanye West, Alex Wiley and more last year, it doesn’t appear that the Chicago trap movement everyone hates to love is going anywhere any time soon. Considering Lupe speaks out so strongly against it, it’ll be important to let his music reflect that, considering he’s no stranger to mainstream/pop radio.
