Dating back to the old school vehicles of the 19th century, the coupé has long been a staple in automobile history. Automakers today however, more commonly use the word coupé as a marketing term to describe sporty two-door style cars. But the word is French and actually means to cut. The term was first applied to 19th-century horse-drawn carriages where the rear-facing seats were “cut” out, leaving just a seat for two behind the driver. Well now there are four doors, room for more passengers, and the power of the horse rest within a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine.
The BMW 2015 4 Series Gran Coupé is the latest addition to the German manufacturer’s roster of 3 and 4 Series models and is based on the two-door version. The new luxury ride will debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month and will be available for purchase in the U.S. in early summer. Watch this video to see the car’s full details.
