“Empire State of Mind” – Jay Z
A mainstream ode to Marley was made in the 2009 radio hit, “Empire State of Mind” off of Jay (no hyphen) Z’s “Blueprint 3”. In verse 2 he states, “Labor Day Parade, rest in peace Bob Marley.” Every year in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, Jay Z’s hometown, there’s a West Indian carnival that features a parade on Labor Day weekend. The Marley reference relates to the numerous amount of citizens blowing the peace plant in the streets during the parade. Rest in peace indeed.
