When Tupac Shakur was murdered 18 years ago, the news of his untimely death rocked the hip hop community, especially long time friend and director, John Singleton.
“Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with,” said Singleton. “His passing deeply affected my life as well as countless people in this world. His life story is as important to my generation.” And for this reason, Singleton will take on the role in bringing Tupac’s s story to the forefront in a biopic film.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the Boyz N The Hood director will rewrite, direct and produce the Shakur biopic film. The long talked about film is scheduled for production this summer.
The question remains of who will play Tupac in the film.
Anthony Mackie played Tupac in Notorious, a biopic film about Brooklyn rapper, Notorious B.I.G. Opinions of who should play the West Coast rapper varies from Denzel Washington to Fredo Starr.
While fans wait for the release of the untitled biopic, they can purchase tickets to the Broadway musical, Holler If Ya Hear Me. Though the musical isn’t based on Tupac’s life, his works of poetry and music is. Opening night is June 19th at the Palace Theater.
