The highly anticipated Season 4 of HBO’s smash “Game of Thrones” returns on April 6.
The Source Magazine was on the red carpet for the New York premiere of “GOT” Season 4 at Avery Fisher Hall on Tuesday, March 18. A massive red carpet lined the Josie Robertson Plaza at Lincoln center and there was even a life sized dragon stationed nearby. When your wig is off, do you get as much fanfare and recognition in the streets?
Emilia Clarke: It takes a lot for people to recognize me I think still because it’s a very different look. There was a moment when we were in Croatia and I was filming and there were a couple of fans outside the trailer and I walked in took the wig off and walked out and they had no idea who I was. (Laughs) I was like “Bye Guys”!
What did you think of Madonna dressing up as Daenerys Targaryen for Purim?
Emilia Clarke: Oh my god! People have asked me that a lot and it’s kind of just been sinking in even more. By the time I’ve come to you guys, I’m like “Oh my god.” Yeah it’s sort of mind blowing … she looked incredible as well. She could come on the show! She’d do good.
What do you do to maintain your gorgeous eyebrows?
Emilia Clarke: Absolutely nothing! True story. Avoid the tweezers.
Where is your character emotionally this season?
Emilia Clarke: She’s on a roller coaster. You think that she’s up and the reality is that she’s in deeper than she ever thought she could be.
Did you know how to horseback ride before the show?
Emilia Clarke: I do now. I learned how to ride for camera which is very different.
Your dragons are bigger this season and seem like they may be harder to control.
Emilia Clarke: They are getting bigger and it’s just simple logistics more than anything. They are harder to maintain, they are harder to keep fed. They are like rowdy teenagers, that’s the best way to describe it, I think. They are starting to have a mind of their own and they blow fire! Fireproofing the world is pretty hard.
What are the challenges your character faces this season?
Emilia Clarke: Every season brings new challenges, every season brings new problems that she has to deal with. A lot of them have been physical, but now for Season 4, they seem to be mental and emotional as well.
Lena Headey returns as Cersei Lannister.
Do you find yourself rooting for her relationship with Jamie?
Lena Headey: It’s such an interesting relationship obviously – for the obvious reasons, but it’s a strange one, you know what I mean? In another time maybe it could have been something great. It’s f-ed up!
Do you have any funny moments from set?
Lena Headey: I often fall down because the stairs are really slippery and I have really slippery shoes, so I’ve done a couple of entrances…
Where is your character emotionally this season?
Lena Headey: She’s pretty vulnerable this season and unprepared. I think we realize how quite unprepared she is for where she is.
After the red carpet, we headed inside to see the season premiere, which was beautiful on the big screen. We were further reminded of the stellar production on this show from the cinematography to wardrobe to props. Before the screening began, guests were treated to a live performance of the show’s theme song and Red Wedding score. Composer Ramin Djawadi served as conductor. Then producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss took some time to acknowledge every cast member in attendance. After the screening, guests were shuttled up the Museum Of Natural History, which was a fitting venue. At coat check, two massive screens displayed “GOT” with a visual of fire behind it. Then as we headed in to the next chamber, before the main hall, the message “All Men Must Die” flashed on the floor. An interactive photo pop with “the throne” was up ahead in addition to some of the costuming from the show. The throne photo booth was very popular. After taking our photo, we headed inside the Whale Room to eat. There were several buffet stands and more costuming on display. Screens with the fiery “GOT” lined the walls of the room. The decorum in the space had a medieval flare with candles, brass candleholders and royal looking tablecloths. Another popular station at the party was a 3D “Ascend the Wall” experience. On the main level, tables lined the room and each actor had his own table. The music was great and we grabbed a “Dragon’s Blood” icee before we left. It was an unforgettable night.
