A Georgia High School held it’s first racially integrated prom and it’s clear that there are still present day race issues.

This past weekend, Wilcox County High School in Rochelle sponsored a prom for both black and white students. In the past the school has not sponsored proms but instead allowed parents to sponsor segregated, invitation-only events.

A group of students attempted to host an integrated prom last year but the school did not officially hold the event. Organizers garnered support through Facebook, collecting almost 30,000 likes and receiving money donations for the event fees and numerous volunteer offers for the protest.

Held in a nearby town, the 2013 protest integration prom was attended by about half of the school’s student body.

While the school has certainly taken a step forward by holding the integrated prom, some students do not feel that everyone at the school has been supportive of the event.

“I’m absolutely sure that there are teachers that are still in the system right now that are at my school and they still don’t want an integrated prom,” said Mareshia Rucker to WMAZ-TV, one of the original organizers.

Wilcox County High School was first integrated during the 1970s, according to The New York Times.
