34-year-old gunman kills three, before turning the gun on himself
Over 16 people were injured yesterday when Specialist Ivan Lopez opened fire at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas. After killing three people, Lopez, who was engaged by military officials, then turned the gun on himself, taking a fatal shot to the head.
According to the Army’s post commander, Lt. Gen. Mark A. Milley, Lopez had suffered from both mental health and behavioral health issues. Milley also noted there is no identifiable motive behind the shooting and that there is no indication that the incident was terrorist-related; however, officials are not ruling anything out.
“We’re heartbroken something like this might have happened again,” said President Barack Obama, referencing the shooting that took place at Fort Hood back in 2009. “I just want to assure all of us that we are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened,” he added.
After having received an update from FBI leaders in regards to the shooting, he requested that his team “utilize every resource available to fully investigate the shooting.”
According to Dr. Glen Couchman, chief medical officer at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas, three patients are currently in critical condition while the remaining victims are all seriously injured.
