Anika Noni Rose plays Beneatha Younger.

"A Raisin In The Sun" Broadway Opening Night - After Party

What do you love about playing Beneatha?

I love her feistiness. I love her intelligence. I love how she’s not afraid to say what is on her mind, whether it’s popular or not. I love the fact that she is searching for a dream but also working for a dream and she is not to be denied.

Tell me about working with Kenny Leon and the cast.

This whole cast is so amazing. Denzel, LaTanya, Sophie and Bryce, the little boy, the whole cast fits in here because they belong here and it is a wonderful working environment because we know that no one is going to let the other person fall. We’re not up there being precious about somebody’s name or where they come from or who their husband is. None of that. It’s about the work and the art and that what’s fantastic about it. What I love about Kenny and particularly about this piece is that he wanted to explore the grittiness of it. It wasn’t about being precious or holding it up in a pedestal. It was about going into it getting in those corners and rolling in that dirt and telling the truth of the story.
