From 2009 to 2011, The DJBooth Freestyle Series became known as a right of passage for emcees preparing to move to the next level. Before exploding into the mainstream consciousness, former underground golden boy’s like Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller, among others, cut their teeth in the heralded series during it’s initial run.
The showcase tallied over 250 entries and helped expose leigoins of new music lovers the world to a number of today’s most impactful leaders of the new school. Returning for its second wave, the DJBooth Freestyle Series taps Chicago emcee Mick Jenkins, whose “Free Nation Rebel Soldier, Pt. II” is still fire, for entry No. 16.
While he continues to prep his highly anticipated new street LP, The Water(s), Mick will join Joey Bada$$, Lil Bibby, The Incomparable Shakespeare and more at the Williamsburg Music Hall in Brooklyn this weekend as apart of The Smokers Club’s annual April, 20th concert.
