U.S. Senators urges NFL to change Washington Redskins name
Washington Redskins and NFL are demanded by U.S Senators in a letter to change their name citing the controversy surrounding LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling.
The letter was published by Democrats Sen. Maria Cantwell and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and signed by 46 other Democrats and two independents, Sens. Bernie Sanders and Angus King. It was not circulated to Republican senators.
The team owner Dan Snyder wants to keep the name because he honors Native Americans and they don’t have a problem with the name. Former team mates and President Obama have spoke out against citing that it’s offensive.
Here is a statement from NFL official, Brian McCarthy about the letter:
“The intent of the team’s name has always been to present a strong, positive and respectful image, the name is not used by the team or the N.F.L. in any other context, though we respect those that view it differently.”
The team recently signed former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Desean Jackson for the next three years and so far things has been good with him and the team as they prep for the upcoming season.
