By now the whole world knows that King James has decided to opt out of his multimillion dollar contract with the Miami Heat–and the LA Lakers got wind of the news as well.  Their first order of business once free agency begins June 30th at 9:01 PM?  Setting up meetings with LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, to try and persuade them to sign with the Lakers.

A source says that although this is the plan, the Lakers are moving cautiously, as they’re aware that James may just re-sign with Miami for less money, so that the team has greater flexibility to upgrade its roster.

Their interest in signing James, however, is still high, and it’s substantially higher than their interest in Melo, at that.

If both basketball superstars joined the Lakers, James and Anthony would both be taking pay cuts.  Anthony would have made a whopping $23.3 million next year and LBJ would have made $20 million.  With the Lakers roster already boasting Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, and Robert Sacre for next season, they’re already utilizing about $34 million of their projected $63 million cap.

Where do you think LeBron and Melo will end up?
