High school student Jason has found his dream girl—the gorgeous Anastacia. There’s just one problem: she doesn’t know he exists. If he can win a spot on the school’s hottest dance crew, Jason might have a shot. But before he does, he’ll have to overcome his battle-ax of a mother, survive Anastacia’s gangsta brother, and pass the crew’s initiation.

In the exclusive clip below, Amber, Kristinia DeBarge and the other girls in the group perform an original song.

Congratulations on the film. How did you get involved?

Nick Cannon approached me to come and do a cameo for his movie. I went to his office and I sat down with him and I was just like “Nick, Look! I would really really like to have a part in this movie, if you could write me in somehow or just give me a role and that’s exactly what he did. So, it was just really cool. Me and Nick are good friends. Just being on set with all of those comedians was just hilarious. We laughed until we cried every day.

Tell us about your character.

Her name is MarryWanna and she’s a senior in high school. She was a popular girl in school and all of the girls kind of hung on to her every word. It was just a bunch of fun and comedy. It was based in high school and it was pretty cool. You know, I’m thirty and I am able to do it. I think I was 28 when we filmed it. It was a little while ago, but it’s just coming out now.

Can you relate to the character?

Not so much. The character that I played in the movie was really really really ghetto and I went to school with a lot of girls like that so I think that’s helped me bring the character out.

Speak about working with Nick in his directorial debut?

Nick is absolutely amazing. I love him to death. He had so much patience. He is just really really smart and really creative. He would come in and help us with our lines and how we can make them better and be funnier and  good punch lines, stuff like that. He’s just an amazing guy. I feel like a lot of people don’t know how cool he is. He didn’t raise his voice; he did not get upset ever, the whole time. He was just really easy going.

Tell us about your character’s style?

The style was kind of punky, I would say.  I was wearing a plaid tennis skit and a little checkered sweater crop top and some thigh highs. It was like sexy rocker chick.

Where did your passion for acting come from?

I tried it. And I really really liked it. It wasn’t like I wanted to be an actress my whole life or anything like that. I just kind of went for it and I was like “Wow! I can really do this”. It was a lot of fun.

Did you take acing classes?

I did take classes. Yep! 100 percent.

Speak about bonding with Kristinia DeBarge and the other ladies in your crew.

We all became really close friends while shooting the movie so we still keep in touch with each other. They are just all amazing girls. There were no egos. Everyone really got along, everyone did their part. And we had a great time.

You looked incredible at the BET Awards. You’ve always known for your bold fashion. How has your style evolved over the years since first coming into the limelight?

For me, I like to wear menswear, I like to wear long gowns. I like to wear a little dress with flowers on it and I like to wear all leather sometimes. It depends on how I feel that day honestly. I wouldn’t necessarily say that I just have one thing that I do.

Can you talk about balancing motherhood and work?

I definitely try to make sure that I take my son out just to do regular things. Like we’ll go to the grocery store, we went food shopping yesterday. I left the BET Awards early because I wanted to go put my son to bed cause a couple of days before that I was extremely busy and I couldn’t really get him to bed how I wanted to. Just stuff like that, sacrifices for my baby.

Will we ever see a creative project between you and Wiz Khalifa?

That would be cool. I don’t know, we’ve never really talked about it. We are kind of both doing our own thing. Right now, his album is coming out. We are just working separately now and then when we’re home, we have our family life. But you know, you never know.

Any upcoming projects you want to share?

I am working on a sitcom that I have a recurring role in. I play Fit Brit and the name of the sitcom is called “Selfie.”

If you could play anyone in a biopic? Who would it be?

Sinead O’Connor
