The “Beyond The Lights” soundtrack will hit stores November 11 and it features Stacy Barthe, Mavado, Nicki Minaj, Rita Ora, Noni (perfomed by Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and Kid Culprit (as performed by Colson “MGK” Baker).
Gina Prince-Bythewood’s latest film “Beyond The Lights” hits theaters November 14 and the music is such an important part of the film, which stars Gugu-Mbatha Raw as singer Noni Jean who is dealing with the pressures of success. The-Dream produced four original songs for the film: “C’mon Boy,” “Masterpiece,” “Private Property,” and “Blackbird.”
The soundtrack also features an original song called “Grateful” that was written by Diane Warren and performed by Rita Ora. “Gina Prince-Bythewood (Beyond the Lights director) made an amazing movie that shows what really goes on beyond the lights of fame … I am so happy she had me write this song. I’m so proud of it and Rita Ora did an amazing vocal. I think it can be a career song for her. It shows a whole different side to her and I’m hoping we get to hear it all over the radio and see her sing it on the Oscars next year,” Warren told Billboard in an exclusive interview.
When we covered the “Beyond The Lights” US premiere at the Urban World Film Festival, Gina discussed the music during a cast talkback.
Well music wise, it really started with what are Noni’s songs. This is a film that needs great songs and from the very early stage I wanted to go after The-Dream – he could write the raunchy that Noni sings at the beginning and also all these beautiful love songs like “1+1″ that Beyonce sings. So I needed someone that could do both. We had a very small budget for this film and I didn’t think we could afford to have him to do four songs but he saw the presentation that we put together and he was a fan of my work and came on board, which was really tremendous and that really set the tone because her songs had to work. You had to believe you could hear them on the radio. The other thing I was very fortunate about was my editor Teri, music is such an important part of the process, and it was Teri who found the song during the Mexico montage between Noni and Kaz falling in love … and the Yuna song as well … We had a great music supervisor Julia Michels and then one of the other cool things is that for Mexico, I asked the two actors to supply some songs that meant something to the characters, so we could play during the shooting of all of that. One of those songs was “Shelter” by Birdy that Gugu supplied to me, I fell in love with that song and it ended up on the film. So the music really came from all different places.
