Ridiculous, isn’t it
A couple of Austin Police Department police officers are have found themselves in hot water after their patrol cameras caught them making some pretty insensitive jokes in their squad cars, including rape jokes.
After making a couple gaffs about how crime would drop if they were allowed to “ride out”, which presumably means they’d ignore certain protocols and go after criminals however they want, an interesting segment begins in which they talk about ignoring reports of rape. This transcription of the audio, which you can play for yourself above, comes from a Gawker report.
Officer 1: Look at that girl over there.
Officer 2: (blows whistle) Go ahead and call the cops. They can’t unrape you. (laughter)
Officer 1: You didn’t turn your camera off, did you?
Officer 2: They can’t unrape you.
Before and after this segment, more meaningless chit-chatter ensues, but what’s heard on this videotape was clearly enough for Austin PD brass. The two officers in question–whose identities have yet to be revealed–are being investigated for the incident.
