Jason Bourne, the fictional star of Universal Pictures’ Bourne movie series (The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Bourne Legacy), was played by A-list Hollywood actor Matt Damon in the first three installments, to rave reviews from both critics and fans. The last Bourne film he acted in, The Bourne Ultimatum, remains the most successful movie of the entire series. It grossed $227 million during its theatrical release in 2007, and set a box-office weekend record for the month of August–that record would be broken by Guardians Of The Galaxy earlier this summer. The follow-up to The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Legacy, featured Jeremy Renner as Aaron Cross in a starring role in place of Matt Damon and was not as successful, though it still claimed the #1 spot at the box office during opening weekend.

Well, 9 years later, in 2016, Matt Damon will return as Jason Bourne, as told to a reporter at a promotional event for Ben Affleck‘s Project Greenlight, which will air on HBO. Damon was there, and E! News asked him if the rumors–that were pretty much spread by Affleck himself–were true:

Yes, next year. It’ll be in 2016 when the movie will actually come out. Paul Greengrass is going to do another one and that’s all I ever said. I just needed him to say yes.

Matt Damon, Paul Greengrass and Universal Pictures are in for a big time pay day.
