According to a breaking Sportscenter report, the Boston Celtics have agreed in principle to send Rajon Rondo, their best player and a key component to their 2008 NBA Championship run, to the Dallas Mavericks for Brandan Wright, Jae Crowder and Jameer Nelson in addition to a future first and second round pick.

This deal, which is “on course to happen tonight” according to ESPN’s Marc Stein, will instantly re-enter the Dallas Mavericks into the Western Conference contender conversation, which is where they began the season before the Golden State Warriors, Memphis Grizzlies and Houston Rockets got off to blazing starts. Once the deal is confirmed, Rondo will join Monta Ellis, who is having a resurgent season, in one of the more potent backcourts in the NBA, and this will no doubt have a positive effect on Rondo’s morale. The Celtics haven’t been good since Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett left for Brooklyn, and despite some promising draft picks over the past few years (Jared Sullinger, Kelly Olynyk), the Celtics have underperformed over the past two seasons.

We’ll have more updates as developments come in, but if everything happens tonight as ESPN is reporting, the Mavs, who are currently 6th in the Western Conference standings, will be looking to rise to the top.
