Serena Williams never fails to impress fans during her outings. But in a recent tennis match–she’s currently playing the Hopman Cup in Australia–she did something quite unusual. Down 6-0 in the first set of her match against Flavia Pennetta, the world’s number one female tennis player realized the reason she wasn’t performing at the level she’d like is more than likely because she didn’t have her coffee. Serena took it upon herself to ask the umpire the following.

Is it illegal to order an espresso?

Apparently, the answer to that question was ‘no.’ Williams immediately ordered the espresso, and the rest is now history. She completely turned it up on her opponent and bounced back in dominating fashion, defeating Pennetta, 0-6, 6-3, 6-0. The 18-time Grand Slam winner caught up with ESPN to briefly explain her mid-match craving.

I am a coffee drinker and I didn’t have mine this morning and I was just feeling it. So I had to get some coffee in me. I told them to just give me a shot of espresso. I asked them if it was legal – “Is it illegal to have a shot of espresso?” – because I had never done it before. I needed some espresso. I needed to wake up – the jetlag gets you all the time.
