Everyday millions of consumers across the United States choose a fast food meal at least once a day in order to save time on grocery shopping and cooking.  However, with recent public reports of McDonald’s and Subway serving bread and meat laden with carcinogenic, artificial ingredients such as azodicarbonamide and dimethylpolysiloxane, health conscious consumers tend to feel under-informed and that they must choose between two evils when deciding what to buy.

In their so-called, “Transparency Campaign”, McDonald’s revealed in October 2014 that their eggs are harvested from chickens that are held in battery cages.  They further admitted that their beef does come from hormone-treated cattle and both cattle and pigs are fed a GMO diet.  With the truth on the table, many people have opted against McDonald’s meals but they still aren’t sure what to make of the other options.

Chipotle‘s latest drastic move proves its commitment to its animal treatment policies and food serving standards.  A recent audit of one meat supplier revealed information that caused Chipotle to pull all of that supplier’s pork from 33% of stores.  Pigs from which this pork was extracted were held in gestation crates with concrete floors and were found to be injected with hormones.  This violates Chipotle’s food standards as the chain prefers to serve meat not treated with hormones.  Chipotle’s policy mandates that animals must be raised in humane conditions including having access to the outdoors and/or well-bedded barns.

Chipotle’s Director of Communications, Chris Arnold, explains to new sources that the chain is currently looking for ways to supplement the pork shortage.
