Super Bowl XLIX pits the defending champion Seattle Seahawks against perennial contenders, the New England Patriots. With both teams loaded with talent on both ends of the field, this is sure to be one of the more entertaining contests. Oddsmakers in Las Vegas have declared that their is no clear favorite in the matchup, which is music to the ears of football fans worldwide. Speaking of music, the Super Bowl halftime show is annually one of the most watched musical performances, beating out the pageantry of the Grammy’s or any platform of that ilk. Put simply, last year’s matchup set the Nielsen ratings record as the most watched Super Bowl in history, boasting 111.5 Million viewers.

With hundreds of millions watching around the globe, and tens of thousands in attendance, the Super Bowl is a wet dream for any live performer. Though African-Americans have influenced virtually all forms of popular music in America, black performers have been scarce at the big game. Leading up to today’s game, it was announced that Missy Elliot would be joining headliner Katy Perry during this years halftime performance. The news had us thinking of the moments that Hip-Hop and/or urban culture has invaded one of America’s grandest stages.
