Harriet Tubman was a former slave in the 1820’s who escaped slavery, and over time returned to save her family members and other slaves by helping them reach freedom in the North. In 1850, the Fugitive Slave Law was enacted, which meant that all escaped slaves when captured, were to be returned to their masters, and citizens of free states, like those up North, had to cooperate. In response, Ms. Tubman then began helping slaves to escape to Canada, where the act of slavery itself was outlawed.
