In a surprising turn of events, Shayanna Jenkins, the fiancé of former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez has agreed to testify in Hernandez’ ongoing murder trial. The former NFL star is currently on trial for the 2013 murder of his former associate Odin Lloyd, who happened to be the boyfriend of Jenkins’ sister. Under law, a person is not required to testify in a trial of their spouse, but since Hernandez and Jenkins are not yet married, the law does not apply in this case.

The murder weapon was never recovered, but detectives suspected Jenkins of discarding it. Security footage from their home show Jenkins throwing out a trash bag that day, a bag she claims not remembering where she discarded, and authorities believe contained the murder weapon. Hernandez sent a a vague text message to Jenkins on the day in question, giving her instructions but never being specific.

Though she initially refused, today it has been revealed that Shayanna Jenkins will testify in the trial and has been granted immunity by prosecutors for her cooperation. Immunity entails that Jenkins would not face any charges even if she did conspire to hide the weapon or if she lied to investigators previously. Of course prosecutors would only put her on the stand if they felt her testimony can help convict Hernandez. This can be the make or break moment prosecutors have been waiting for, as Judge Susan Garsh has barred valuable evidence from being used against Hernandez.
