Charles Hamilton was often referred to, when he first emerged in 2009, as the next Kanye West, with a sprinkling of Lupe Fiasco. He was abrasive but smooth, outspoken but reserved, and ahead of his time production wise.

Sometime after signing with Interscope, Charles’ derailed. Rumors ranged from everything from drugs to clinical mental issues, but for whatever reason, Charles Hamilton wasn’t making music anymore, he wasn’t “in” the industry anymore, and he’d disappeared from the face of the earth, despite one of the most refreshing and enigmatic rises to prominence in recent history. Earlier today in a press release, Republic Records announced that they’ve reached a deal with Charles Hamilton, and have added the volatile artist to their star-studded roster, which also includes Drake, Lil Wayne and Nicki Minaj. In addition to that, they’ve announced that Hamilton’s new single, “New York Raining,” which features Rita Ora, will debut, via an appearance by Hamilton and Ora themselves, on the season finale of Empire, which will air on March 18.

Welcome back, Charles.
