The 50th anniversary of Malcolm X’s death on February 21st marks the beginning of a year-long commemoration celebration & tribute, starting with the international “Moment of Transition & Prayer.”
In order to pay respects and honor the memory and legacy of the late human rights leader and international icon, El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz, more commonly known as “Malcolm X,” his daughters, in conjunction with the X Legacy, are proud to announce an international “Moment of Transition & Prayer”on Saturday, February 21, 2015, at 3:10 PM EST, marking the 50thanniversary of his death.
Malcolm X’s daughters–Ambassador Shabazz, Qubilah Shabazz, Ilyasah Shabazz, Gamilah Shabazz, Malikah Shabazz, Malaak Shabazz–and their legacy organization, X Legacy, LLC (referred to as “X Legacy”), will host and support a series of events commemorating the late legend, spanning throughout 2015. They, along with X Legacy, are inviting members of the local, national, and international community to commemorate this day, the 50th anniversary of Malcolm X’s death, by honoring his life’s work, ideals, and the principles he stood for and championed: justice, freedom, dignity, family, self-help, and the appreciation of history and culture.
Says Malcolm X’s eldest daughter, Ambassador Attallah Shabazz:
“Throughout the 50 years, since the 1965 assassination of my father before my eyes, the resonance of his loving and engaging presence in our home, and in my life directly, still accompanies me strongly. At times, longingly, I miss him (and my mom), greatly. As an up-close witness to a mindful evolution, my father’s life serves as an everlasting inspiration to exhibit respect, compassion, and consideration to all people. He was—is—a gift for me, and I am touched that his life continues to nurture others.”
On February 21st, there will be numerous commemorative events.
In Harlem, New York, at The Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center (the former Audubon Ballroom), an annual program will be organized and produced to illuminate the life’s work of Malcolm X, highlighting his ideals, in the very location he was martyred.
In Oakland, California, there will be a Bay Area Unity Vigil and Prayer, commemorating the 50th Year Anniversary of the Martyrdom of Malcolm X.
College students all around the country will also join in holding space to remember Malcolm X, by organizing their own events on campus, such as UC Berkeley, where a coalition of student groups will host a program called“From the Audubon to Ferguson: 50 Years Later, The Struggle Continues,” which will feature an honorary tribute to Yuri Kochiyama.
Since this year also marks the 90thbirthday of Malcolm X (May 19th, 2015), there will be a worldwide call for a special holiday honoring him, called “International Malcolm X Day,”to celebrate his life and legend
The Shabazz family and X Legacy will join forces with community and world leaders, renowned scholars and authors, universities, students, artists, organizations, charities, socially responsible businesses, and other activists for a series of planned and future events, to include conferences, performances, and programs. Besides the year-long tribute celebrating Malcolm X, the work and legacy of his wife, the late Dr. Betty Shabazz, will also be acknowledged, as she emerged triumphant as a leader in her own right, as both an educator and the guardian of her husband’s legacy, following his untimely death.
