Friday night was very tragic for a Brooklyn family. A fire occurred at the home of an Orthodox Jewish family that may have been caused by a hot plate. According to the NY Daily News, the family of 9 were at home when they used the hot plate to warm up food, but it was left unattended and started the fire.

According to witnesses, the mother jumped from the window of her home and appeared to have been burned when she flagged down firefighters to save her children.

The children that died in the blaze ranged from 5 -15 years old. At the time of the investigation, there were no signs of working smoke detectors in the home. The mother was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center and is said to have been placed in a hyperbaric chamber. The lone surviving child, a 14 year old girl, was rushed to Staten Island University Hospital and listed in critical condition. The father is believed to have been in a conference and was not home during the fire.
