On this day in history 31-years-ago was a day of mourning, the day when Soul Music lost superstar Marvin Pentz Gaye Jr. The singer was taken at the short age of 44 the day before his birthday, fatally shot by his father Marvin Gaye Sr. on April 1, 1984. Although tragic circumstances ended Gaye’s life, his music provides a legacy that will live on through R&B and Soul forever.

The Washington D.C’s native son was truly one of a kind, singing our socks off to his classics like “Let’s Get It On” and “Sexual Healing”. The musician owned his time as the “Prince of Motown” with 18 Top 10 singles and two Grammy Awards. His talent was undeniable and landed him an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame after his passing, alone with many other foundations and tributes in his name. Marvin Gaye touched lives through his artistry and although we remember the anniversary of his death this week, we celebrate his birthday as well, tomorrow April 2nd.
