One of the most controversial and debated songs in music history may have its real meaning revealed after the original manuscript to the song “American Pie” was sold at an auction in New York this week.

Don McLean, the 8-minute song’s scribe, has admitted back in February that the song was about the deaths of singers 50s rock n’ rollers Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and Jiles Richardson, but said that the song’s full meaning is within the multiple drafts and handwritten notes that were sold in the Christie auction for $1.2 million.

The 1972 smash hit was #1 on the US charts for a month and was even remade by pop icon Madonna in 2000, which topped charts around the globe.
