Bikram yoga is a 90-minute class that consist of the same series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises in a room heated to 104 °F. Founded by Bikram Choudhury, Bikram yoga has been widely promoted by various celebrities.

For years, veteran Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons has always shared his love for yoga. In a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey, the mogul shared his ability to work more efficiently through practicing yoga. “All the creativity came from seconds and flashes of presence. So, the more you can expound on that, you can do twice as much in half the time now.”

In our new issue of the Source Magazine, we speak with Bikram Yoga Harlem co-owner Adam Roper about the benefits and misconceptions about Bikram yoga.
Here’s an excerpt from Roper in our new HER Source section in issue #265!

“A lot of people think yoga is just relaxing but it’s also coordination, strength and balance and those things aren’t always relaxing and can cause people to become preoccupied with their performance. The physical and mental effort you put into class can leave you with a reduced anxiety level so if you have a high stressed job, or you’re an anxious person, you use that anxiety and by the end of class that anxiety is removed and you’re more calm.”
