39-year old Liana Barrientos is awaiting her fate after doing what she thought was a good deed. According to CNN, Barrientos was arrested for marrying men to help them become Citizens of the United States. But she failed to do one thing…divorce them. She is facing two criminal counts of “offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree.”
The first time Barrientos got married she was 23-years old in Westchester County, New York. The following year, she married again in Westchester County, then 18 days later, she married yet another man. She would then say “I do” to five more guys, all 18 days apart.
Her problem, for as many times as she said “I do,” she never said “I don’t, anymore.” It is believed that Barrientos married approximately 10 men between the years of 1999-2002, all in Westchester County, Long Island, New Jersey and the Bronx. In fact, she is believed to still be married to 4 of them. in 2010, Barrientos got married one last time and on her application license stated that this marriage was her “first and only.”
According to prosecutors, Barrientos case was brought to the Bronx District Attorney’s Office by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the Department of Homeland’s Security Investigation Division. The men who Barrientos married all hailed from “red flagged” countries that included, Egypt, Pakistan, Turkey, Georgia and Mali.
If convicted, Barrientos faces up to four years in prison.
