Toya Graham, 42, has come forward and explained how she was able to identify her 16 year old son, Michael, during the protests.

Graham, who is a single mother of five children, says that when the protests began, she “hunted” her son down after seeing him on TV. In an interview with CBS, Graham says she zeroed in on her son, who was wearing all black and a mask, and at that time, she didn’t care about cameras. Graham has four daughters and one son, and did not want her son to end up like Freddie Gray.

“My son is my everything,” Graham wrote. “As a mother I couldn’t understand half of what Mrs. Brown is going through. My child (is) not a perfect child but (he’s) still my child.”

Since the footage of Graham beating her son went viral, she is being praised for stepping in and protecting her son from participating in the protests. Baltimore Police Commissioner, Anthony Batts, praised the mother for disciplining her son.

“If you saw on one scene, you had one mother who grabbed her child who had a hood on his head and she started smacking him on the head because she was so embarrassed,” Batts continues, “I wish I had more parents that took charge of their kids out there tonight.”
