Last week  Angelo Garcia who was in the boy band Menudo (alongside Ricky Martin), shared for the first time during his interview on  Dr. Zoe Today that he was sexually abused by someone close to the band’s administration throughout his time with Menudo as well as by a neighbor before he was in the band and by a teacher after.

Inspired by Angelo’s bravery, the show is reaching out to the public to call their toll free number and share their own stories of sexual abuse in a message. Dr. Zoe Today is putting together a montage of these recordings and will be airing it on an episode titled, “Breaking the Silence.”

“My show is fun & controversial about ‘pop sexuality.’ We interview celebrities, then answer listeners questions on love, sex and relationships. We have encouraged safe sex, monogamy, the benefits of spicing up healthy relationships, discussing topics others may steer clear of. Sexual abuse involving children is something more serious but that we will openly discuss using the show as a platform to bring awareness in the fact that it is way more common than any of us can fathom,” says the show’s host, Dr. Zoe Shuster.

In the United States, 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys is a victim of child sexual abuse. With many organizations and resources available on child abuse, most focus on physical, mental and emotional aspects. Sexual abuse is a topic many find taboo and those who experience it often hide it for years, even believing that it was their own fault. With a massive, diverse audience, Dr. Zoe Today aims to raise awareness and make a difference, encouraging victims to break the silence.

To be a part of the show’s montage, call 1.844.MY.DR.ZOE and select option 2. Leave a 1-3 minute message sharing your story and Dr. Zoe Today will include it, while leaving you completely anonymous if you’d like.
