In celebration of HBO’s film Bessie starring Queen Latifah Bessie’s 81 Theatre Tour hit the West Coast.
Lasting from May 12 to the 14, the Bessie’s 81 Theatre Tour showcase featured musical newcomers and honored the legacy of Bessie Smith. D-Nice was behind the DJ booth all night along with emcee Luke James. Other talent included Tiffany Gouche, KING and up-and-comer Kehlani. Stacy Barthe and producer Bryan Michael Cox also hosted a private student-only workshop for songwriters and producers. The LA leg of the series ended with a surprise performance by Solange on May 14. Bessie actors Tika Sumpter, Tory Kittles and Khandi Alexander all attended the first day of Bessie’s 81 Theatre Tour. Bessie is now playing on HBO, check out pictures from the event below.
