8 years later, Kanye West still shoulders blame for mother’s passing
Donda West, Kanye West‘s immortalized late mother, has always been an integral part in the Chicago native’s career, both before and after her tragic 2007 passing. Since then, Kanye’s design company, DONDA, has helped re-write creative control and design rules, especially regarding album packaging and stage design. Every chance he gets, Kanye credits his mother with helping to shape his early mindframe, and culturing him at a very young age, despite growing up in the treacherous south side of Chicago.
In a recent interview with Q magazine, Kanye opened up about his mother in a way he rarely has. “My mom. If I had never moved to L.A. she’d be alive. I don’t want to go far into it because it will bring me to tears.”
Kanye’s mother is the subject of a few of his most iconic records, most notably “Hey Mama,”–which he made while Mrs. West was still alive–and more recently, his Paul McCartney assisted “Only One,” which Ye says was his mother speaking through him to her granddaughter, North West.
Yeezy also touches on his daughter, new music, and his dreams of shifting the world’s perspective on fashion and design. “I challenge people with sonic beauty. For a society that’s been greyed out by mediocrity, it’s like eating a whole bunch of McDonald’s and then you get some real food.”
