According to the World Health Organization(WHO) announcement made on Monday, Cuba is the first country in the world to stop the transmission of the HIV/AIDS virus from mother-to-baby as well as the transmission of the STD syphilis from mothers to their newborns. WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan stated,

Eliminating transmission of a virus is one of the greatest public health achievements possible. This is a major victory in our long fight against HIV and sexually transmitted infections, and an important step towards having an AIDS-free generation.”

AIDS is defined in some college medical terminology books as genealogical testing that went awry, but with advancements in tests and treatment scientists now hope to find a cure very soon. A Nigerian professor, Maduike Ezeibe, has produced an anti-viral drug for treating HIV/AIDS called Antivirt, though some have doubts about its authenticity. The professor at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) in Abia State, has insisted that his discovered treatment is real and effective.

In the United States, testing and treatment of pregnant women has brought down mother-to-child transmission rates by more than 90 percent. In 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 162 children were infected at birth. 14 percent of Americans with HIV don’t even know it, but with awareness perhaps there will be a cure in this decade. In the mean time, scientists will continue to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic that has taken the lives of over 39 million people since it was discovered.
