A 44 year old woman arrested for shoplifting was found unresponsive in her cell, which makes the fourth death of a Black woman behind bars in two weeks
Raynetta Turner of Westchester County has been found dead in a holding cell Monday afternoon, after being arrested Saturday for shoplifting at a wholesale foods store.
Conflicting reports state that Turner requested to be taken to the hospital upon her arrest and was not feeling well, but she was returned to her cell within a few hours after being taken to the hospital.
The mayor of Mount Vernon stated in a press release that Turner previously had bariatric surgery and a history of hypertension.
An autopsy is pending and no further information is available regarding the time of death or what transpired prior to her being found dead in police custody.
