A few days ago, the San Fransisco 49ers released all-pro defensive end Aldon Smith from their roster. The move came as no surprise as it was a day after he had been arrested in Los Angeles for an alleged hit and run, driving under the influence and vandalism charges. This is not Smith’s first run in with the law, having been arrested several times since coming into the league in 2011, even serving a 9 game suspension last season after being arrested at LAX last year.

With all of the issues surrounding Smith, it is difficult to ignore the fact that he is one of the youngest all-pro’s currently playing in the NFL. He is arguably one of, if not, the best playing at his current position. Though they’ve supported him throughout all of his incidents, the 49ers were willing to part ways with him.

On the other end of the spectrum, the New York Football Giants have long been known as the family owned team that stays away from players with off the field issues, regardless their level of talent. Having won two Super Bowl trophies within the past decade, that formula might be working for them. But today it is being reported that the Giants are showing heavy interest in Aldon Smith. The G-Men clearly need a strong presence on their defensive line considering the July 4th accident involving Jason Pierre-Paul causing him to have his index finger amputated.

This would obviously be a different approach for the Giants, but surely their fans would not have a problem with such a big addition.

As a lifelong New York Giants fan, I hope this comes to fruition. They should also give hometown guy Ray Rice a look too. Just saying. This is the same franchise whose greatest player is Lawrence Taylor. C’mon guys.Rocko Rathon (@Rocko_CNK)
