A 14-year old boy, Gyasi Hughes, got into an altercation with one of his peers at school on Friday, and the controversial reaction by a Texas police offier has become the central topic of a building controversy.
According to a statement from the police force, Hughes was taken down as viciously as he was by the police officer–which you can witness at the :28 mark of the above video clip–because he was a threat to “his safety and the safety of others,” following Hughes’ shoving match with a fellow student over a pair of goggles.
It’s hard to discern the exact nature of the conversation using the above video, which doesn’t have sound, but it appears that two officers were speaking to Hughes, and after he made a couple half-hearted moves away from one of the officers, the cop standing directly in front of him grabbed him by his throat, and threw him down to the ground. The following is an account from Hughes himself on exactly what transpired.
As I was walking away the officer was pushing me in the back and I was like, ‘why are you pushing me? I’m not doing anything, I’m walking away like you told me to. Finally we get like in this little corner and he’s sitting there yelling at me saying, ‘You shouldn’t be rude to the lady (assistant principal), don’t talk to her like that,’ I was like, ‘what are you talking about, I’m not doing anything. Finally I asked him (the officer) to leave me alone and that’s the point when he grabbed me and took me down and tried to detain me. I was just very upset, I was amped up over the fight and wasn’t really thinking.
