Sevyn Streeter has exceeded all expectations as a young girl out of Haines City, Florida. Only after a few minutes of sharing a couch with the singer, her genuine and light hearted aura was easily felt as she explained how she ended up with her stage name. Born as Amber Streeter, she gives thanks to her parents, Tim and Karen, for the name that helped her reach fame. Her mother gave birth to her at seven months, on the seventh month and the seventh day, and since it’s been impossible for her to escape the lucky number, she just claimed it.
In this exclusive interview with the Grammy Award winning songwriter, she tells us how she overcame the struggles of transitioning into a solo artist, as well as finding balance between fame and reality. She also gives the ladies some relationship advice. This past week, it was announced that her longtime relationship with label mate, BOB, is history. No shade, but Sevyn seemed unbothered with the idea of being single and shared how to turn heartbreak into a pay check. When asked how many “get out of jail free” cards do you give a man, she bluntly stated –
“We all have that place that if the right person pushes you, you can go there. You know your limit and the limit is different for every woman, but for me it’s like that limit right before you cause me to hop all the way out of my character. I’m not gonna let you do that!”
Most artists in a vulnerable state, whether it’s a breakup, a tragedy, or new transition will turn to their craft to release the negative energy and create a memorable body of work. Staring directly in the camera she goes on to say –
“I’ll write a song about you before I let you do that and I’ll make paper off of you before I let you do that.”
On Instagram recently, the singer turned heads and opened eyes when she mentioned the “Crabs in a barrel” struggle for women in music.
During the interview, Sevyn shared her thoughts about this separation between women in R&B and her dreams to one day get power houses, Beyonce, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Tinashe, Jazmine Sullivan, etc. all in the booth for a new age women’s anthem. It’s been entirely too long since a “Lady Marmalade” esque record has been released and the strongest women in music are responsible to make it happen.
