Rex Ryan dropped an interesting and little-known nugget Wednesday during his conference call with the Miami media. According to Ryan, he once tried to hire Dan Campbell on his coaching staff with the New York Jets.

They will face off for the first time as head coaches on Sunday.

People that know Campbell has obviously been extremely impressed with him,” Ryan said. “When I see his team, I get it. I see they’re going more two tight-end personnel, pounding the ball in there.”

Ryan also joked about Campbell’s imposing, intimidating look. He is the youngest coach (39) in the NFL and a former tight end for a decade.

“Most times when I go across field I can whip most head coaches, but I ain’t whipping that one,” Ryan said laughing. “I’m not even trying to whip that one. He’s a big dude, man. I’m 52 years old. I’d like to see 53.

Ryan’s alpha male boisterousness has always been a tool that motivates his players. Let’s so how this confession about Campbell effects the teams play this Sunday.
