Hotel security called police after Reyes allegedly grabbed his wife by the throat, and slammed her into a sliding glass door in their hotel room at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. Reyes was released on bail following his arrest, while his wife was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, and was treated for injuries to her neck, wrist, and thigh.

It remains to be seen how Reyes will be punished by Major League Baseball, but in August, new commissioner Rob Manfred announced a new domestic violence policy that gives Manfred more leeway with how he can discipline players, citing “just cause.”

Reyes began his career with the New York Mets and became an enthralling talent, becoming the team’s all-time leader in triples and stolen bases during his 9-year tenure. He would go on to play for the Blue Jays and Marlins, and landed in Colorado this year, where he’s currently under contract. The Rockies released a brief statement late last night that reads as follows:

We continue to gather information and will address this matter appropriately, in accordance with Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.

We’ll have updates as soon as they’re made available.
