In illegal marketplaces on the web that solicit things like drugs and weapons, it is now being reported that internet thieves have figured out a way to sell subscriptions to music and movie streaming services at the fraction of the monthly subscription price. So low that some have claimed that it’s now possible to purchase lifetime subscriptions from this newly created hustle.
“We found pretty much everything possible available for sale. Every possible service and every possible flavor you could think of was being made for sale,”
says vice president and CTO of Intel Security Raj Samani.
Lifetime subscriptions for Spotify have shown up in these marketplaces for as low as $1.95 while lifetime subscriptions for Netflix have ben seen as low as $0.50. The sellers even guarantee a replacement account if the initial account is shut down, even though it’s illegal in the first place. Samani says that the hackers make these transactions as risk-free as possible.
Samani says that the marketplace for these services are so proficient, “they even have their own help desk.”
