The new event series is a drama following the aftermath of a racially charged police shooting involving an African-American cop and white teen in Tennessee. Lathan will play the role of lead expert investigator of the case alongside a special prosecutor sent by the Department of Justice. The pair will navigate through public scrutiny and social uproar to seek justice.

The drama was written and executive-produced by Gina Prince-Bythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood. Those names may sound familiar, as Prince-Bythewood and Lathan previously worked together on Love and Basketball.

“Gina and Reggie have crafted a profoundly moving portrayal of a timely and sensitive issue that pervades our culture at this very moment,” says Fox President David Madden in a statement. “This is not only an important story to tell, but also an explosive mystery-thriller, and we couldn’t be in better hands both with the creative team behind this, along with the very talented Sanaa Lathan leading the cast.”

Shots Fired comes at a timely manner as this country is still dealing with the aftermath of many racial crimes this year alone. Following the success of Wayward Pines and Empire, it will be interesting to see how this new series fits in. Shots Fired will debut on Fox in 2016.
