When Dr. Dre announced he would finally be releasing his follow up to 2001, originally thought to be Detox, the Hip Hop world was turned on its ear. As it happens, Detox was in fact scrapped years ago, and in commemoration of F. Gary Gray‘s Straight Outta Compton release, Dre released an album titled Compton. He reminded everyone of what initially drove the legendary producer to form the group NWA 27 years ago: hard beats, harder lyrics and in-depth storytelling. This comes to life viciously on “Deep Water,” a joint effort between Dre and his protegé Kendrick Lamar. The two artists hit Focus…, Cardiak and DJ Dahi‘s instrumental at full speed, comparing growing up in their hometown of Compton to being tossed—without warning—into the hallows of the ocean. You know, where the sharks hang. As Kendrick puts it, “N*gga this is life in my aquarium!”

(You know Dr. Dre isn’t putting any of his new music on Spotify. Listen to “Deep Water” on Apple Music here.)
