Rumors spread for years that today’s contemporary R&B stars were borrowing from Tory Lanez, the Canadian singer/songwriter who bubbled over in 2014 with an appearance on YG’s My Krazy Life album. In 2015, Lanez finally found solo success with “Say It,” an even-keel traditional R&B song that will reel you in with its deft sample of Brownstone’s “If You Love Me” and Lanez’s slightly abrasive delivery (“let a young n*gga get down on it”) offset by the tranquil soundscape set forth by Pop & Oak (Miguel‘s “Use Me” and Alessia Cara‘s “Here”).
