While Miley Cyrus‘ appearance in Bill Murray’s Netflix special, A Very Murray Christmas, was on the festive and cheery side of things, the singer has today, December 25th, released an intentionally depressing holiday track.

Over simple guitar strums and hand bells, Miley belts out an emotionally draining Christmas story, reflecting on watching too much TV, family dramas and of course, taking bong rips.

“This is my sad Christmas song,” Miley sings. “I’ve had it stuck in my head all day long. I wrote it in the car on my ride home / I knew I’d walk in the door and be alone.” From there, it’s not difficult to get the gist. It goes on to balance being grim and being beautifully sung. At the end of the day, one can’t deny Miley can sing.

“My Sad Christmas Song” was recorded alongside The Flaming Lips, much like her last album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz, which the singer released for free following hosting this year’s VMAs.
